We are pleased to bring you the 9th annual San Diego Green Building Conference & Expo (SDGBCE23) on Friday, October 27, 2023 at UC San Diego Park & Market. This is San Diego's premier event for green building professionals from all fields of expertise to come together to share ideas, inspiration and connection. This year we are partnering with the World Woman Foundation's Sustainability Forum taking place on Thursday, October 26th at UC San Diego Park & Market. Join both days of this exciting collaboration to hear from visionary leaders, activists, entrepreneurs, academics, artists and policymakers.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY EDEN BRUKMAN, COUNTY OF SAN DIEGO CHIEF SUSTAINABILITY OFFICER

As we work together to foster the scale of change necessary to address the climate emergency, we must draw on our personal and collective experiences to bring awareness, knowledge, and strength. Eden will share her own journey and some of the current initiatives at the County of San Diego that contribute to meaningful solutions for the greater San Diego region and beyond.

Eden Brukman is the first Chief Sustainability Officer for the County of San Diego and leads the Office of Sustainability and Environmental Justice. For more than 25 years, Eden has focused on establishing socially and environmentally responsible solutions for human habitat: she coauthored Living Building Challenge and directed its evolution and global adoption from 2007-2012; cocreated and acted as the first Technical Director of the Health Product Declaration Collaborative; and contributed to the early development of other programs such as Declare, the Pharos Project, and EcoDistricts. Prior to her role in San Diego, she served as the Senior Green Building Coordinator for the San Francisco Environment Department. Eden was a named recipient of the Buckminster Fuller Challenge award, and was designated one of the Forty Under 40 in Portland, Oregon, as well as a Living Building Hero by the International Living Future Institute. She is a LEED Fellow and has received the Women in Sustainability Leadership Award. Also a licensed architect, Eden's advocacy efforts have led to policy reform, decentralized building and community developments, and the creation of a network of local action groups in cities all over the world.

MISSION AND THEME

The causes and effects of climate change are well understood and the solutions are many and attainable. The built environment has played a significant role in the causes of climate change but now can play a large role in reversing it. In the past, green buildings were designed to do less harm, or more recently to have net zero impact, on the environment they were in. Now, we are understanding that the built environment needs to be designed to help regenerate the environment it shares, in order to maximize its role in climate change mitigation and adaptation. To reverse the negative impacts the built environment has made, it is time for it to replenish water supplies, regenerate natural resources and provide energy to the surrounding communities. We need to be building positive: Building+.

The San Diego Green Building Council’s mission has always been to inspire, educate and collaborate with our communities to champion design innovations that make our region and beyond more resilient and sustainable. The goal of SDGBCE23 is to showcase projects and ideas that are pushing boundaries of design, construction, organizational change or policy that will get us Building Positive - therefore this year's theme is: Building+ Cultivating a Regenerative Future.
