The San Diego Green Building Council is proud to partner with Greenbuild and Olivewood Gardens for the 2020 and 2021 Legacy Project.

The Legacy Project responds to the need for healthy food education, production, and access. It also speaks to the social equity pillar of sustainability. Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center's historic 7.85-acre property in National City, California serves as an inclusive and interactive, indoor-outdoor classroom for San Diegans of South Bay. They are driven to build healthy families in their local environment. They do this through science-based nutrition education, hands-on gardening lessons, cooking classes, and leadership development programs for both the youth and adults. With the community's ongoing food security issues, the 2021 Legacy Project is helping Olivewood Garden address these concerns through increased food production capability. This year's work includes terracing land within the master plan created last year (see below), installing new raised beds including soil on the new site, mulching and painting a mural on the storage shed in Olivewood Garden's current production farm.

The 2020-21 legacy project centered around creating an outdoor garden Master Plan which included the installation of a blueberry garden, with shade sails, rainwater collection and irrigation system.

Master Plan Highlights:

  • A multi-purpose outdoor classroom
  • Terraced and shaded growing spaces
  • Natural Pond
  • Fruit Trees
  • Community spaces to gather

Congrats to our Legacy Project team for this well-deserved honor!
