This course is approved for 2 AIA Learning Units and 2 General LEED Continuing Education Units

From cutting fossil fuel holdings in its $80 billion investment portfolio to application of innovative research and education, the University of California (UC) is a leader in addressing the threat of climate disruption. Starting in 2003 with a student campaign that led to adoption of a policy on Green Building Design and Clean Energy Standards, the UCs are addressing everything from overall climate protection to transportation, procurement and water. This class will offer an overview of the achievements, lessons learned, and course corrections on the path to carbon neutrality across the UC system. A deep dive will be provided of two campuses, UC Merced and UC San Diego.

Learning Objectives:

-Attendees will leave with an understanding of translating campus and system-wide policies to effective applications - and how to review for continuous improvement

-Understand how the UC’s implemented these programs, as well as the most effective, nuanced approaches for differences in climate, building, and population

-Demonstrate what it takes (time, effort, $$) to implement large-scale sustainability programs, from a universal standard to modifications for campus-level specifics

-Describe ways for successful user-engagement - from the University President to students - and how voices are heard, part of collective solutions

-After this session, attendees will be able to link related objectives into building design and technologies
